Experiencing an Orthodontic Emergency? We’re Here to Help.

While true orthodontic emergencies are rare, we understand that discomfort can happen. If you’re experiencing significant pain or an appliance issue that’s beyond your control, don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re committed to resolving any issues promptly, ensuring your comfort and progress in your treatment.

Quick Solutions for Common Issues

Before coming to see us, there are a few things you can do to alleviate temporary discomfort:

Quick Fix 1:

If any part of your appliance is loose and can be removed, carefully place it in a plastic bag or envelope and bring it with you to your next visit.

Quick Fix 2:

If your braces are causing irritation, use soft wax on the troublesome area. If a wire has shifted, you can gently reposition it with needle-nosed pliers, securing it back into place.

Pro Tip:

Even after temporarily resolving the issue, it’s important to call us as soon as possible to schedule a repair. Allowing the appliance to remain damaged could impact your treatment timeline.

Managing General Discomfort

When you first get your braces, it’s normal to feel some general soreness. For the first few days, your teeth may be tender when biting down. We recommend sticking to a soft diet until the discomfort subsides.

Soothing Irritated Gums

If your gums feel sore or irritated, a warm salt-water rinse can help ease the discomfort.

How to make a salt-water rinse:

Dissolve one teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of warm water and rinse vigorously.

Additional Tips for Comfort:

  • Try the Healthy Gums Rinse by The Natural Dentist.
  • Apply Orabase (available at most pharmacies) to the sore spots.
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers like Tylenol can help, but avoid Aspirin, Ibuprofen, and Naproxen as they may slow down tooth movement.
  • Use dental wax to protect your lips, cheeks, or tongue from irritation.

Loose Appliances

If you’re experiencing an issue with your appliance, using wax on the irritated area can provide temporary relief.

Loose Brackets or Bands

If a bracket or band is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and apply wax for comfort. If it detaches easily, save it in an envelope and bring it to your next visit.

Loose Wires

To reposition a loose wire, try using tweezers or needle-nosed pliers. If necessary, you can tie the wire into place with floss.

How to Tie the Wire Back into Place:

Tie the floss around the bracket to secure the wire. If the wire is causing discomfort and can’t be repositioned, you can trim the wire behind the last secured tooth using a small clipper. Don’t forget to apply wax to any sharp ends.

Poking Wires

If a wire is poking you, gently push it down using the back of a pencil eraser, or apply wax to the area for relief.

Whatever the issue, we’re always here to provide you with personalized care and solutions to keep your smile journey on track. Don’t hesitate to reach out to us with any concerns!

Your Guide to Thriving with Braces

Navigating life with braces may feel like a big change, but we’re here to make it easy. Below, you’ll find helpful tips for daily care, as well as things to keep in mind as you embark on your smile transformation. Still have questions? No problem—give us a call anytime!

Eating with Braces

Braces don’t mean you have to say goodbye to all your favorite foods. However, there are a few things you’ll want to avoid to keep your treatment on track and your appliances intact. Here’s a list of foods to steer clear of:

Foods to Avoid:

  • Chewy foods (e.g., bagels, licorice)
  • Crunchy foods (e.g., popcorn, chips, ice)
  • Sticky foods (e.g., caramel candies, chewing gum)
  • Hard foods (e.g., nuts, hard candies)
  • Foods that require biting into (e.g., corn on the cob)

Foods You Can Enjoy:

  • Dairy: Soft cheese, pudding, milk-based drinks
  • Breads: Soft tortillas, pancakes, muffins without nuts
  • Grains: Pasta, soft-cooked rice
  • Meats/Poultry: Soft-cooked chicken, meatballs
  • Seafood: Tuna, salmon, crab cakes
  • Vegetables: Mashed potatoes, steamed spinach, beans
  • Fruits: Applesauce, bananas, soft cut fruit
  • Treats: Ice cream without nuts, Jell-O, soft cake

Soreness from Braces & Appliances

Experiencing some soreness or tenderness in your mouth after getting braces? Don’t worry—this is completely normal. Your teeth are adjusting to the braces, and your mouth will soon become accustomed to the changes.

To ease discomfort, rinse with a warm saltwater solution: Dissolve one teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of lukewarm water, swish gently, and gargle for a couple of minutes (do not swallow).

For more severe pain, try an over-the-counter pain reliever. You may also experience some irritation in your lips, cheeks, and tongue as they adapt to your braces. To help, apply a small amount of wax to the affected area, and feel free to ask us for more if needed.

Loose Teeth

It’s completely normal for your teeth to feel a little loose when you begin treatment. This is because your braces are gently loosening your teeth to move them into the correct position. Once your teeth have been repositioned, they will no longer feel loose.

Loose Wires & Bands

Occasionally, a wire or band may become loose. If this happens, reach out to us to schedule a check-up. If any piece of your appliance comes off, please save it and bring it to your next appointment.

For a quick fix, you can gently reposition a loose wire using the back of a spoon or the eraser end of a pencil. If the loose wire is irritating your lips or cheeks, apply wax or a wet cotton ball to the area to relieve the discomfort.

Taking Care of Your Appliances

To ensure your treatment stays on schedule, it’s essential to take good care of your appliances. This includes wearing rubber bands, headgear, or retainers as prescribed. Damaged appliances can delay your progress, so remember to follow your orthodontist’s instructions closely.

Playing Sports with Braces

Yes, you can still play sports with braces! To protect your teeth and braces, we recommend wearing a mouthguard. We offer custom mouthguards designed specifically for braces in our office.

If you experience an accident or injury while playing sports, immediately check for any damage to your teeth or appliances. If you notice any issues, contact our office right away. For temporary relief, apply wax to any painful areas or rinse your mouth with warm saltwater.

With a few simple precautions and care tips, you’ll navigate life with braces like a pro! Always feel free to reach out if you need additional guidance—we’re here to support you every step of the way.

Retainers Keep Your Smile Looking Sharp

Your retainer is your secret weapon in keeping that perfect smile, so let’s make sure it stays in top shape! Follow these simple tips to ensure it serves you well for years to come:

Top Tips for Retainer Care:

  • Wear it consistently: Keep your retainer in at all times until your orthodontist gives you other instructions.
  • Take it out while eating: Always remove your retainer during meals and store it safely in its case. (Lunchrooms and restaurants can be hazardous for retainers!)
  • Clean it daily: Give your retainer a thorough brushing once a day with a toothbrush and warm—not hot—water. This will remove plaque and eliminate odors. You can use Efferdent® or other orthodontic appliance cleaners, but they should never replace brushing.
  • Keep it in its case when not in use: Always store your retainer in its case when you’re not wearing it. Pets love to chew on them!
  • Getting used to it: You may feel a little awkward speaking at first, but don’t worry! Practice speaking, reading, or even singing aloud to get used to it more quickly.
  • Handle with care: Retainers are delicate! Be careful to avoid damaging them. If it gets lost or broken, reach out to us immediately.
  • Need adjustments? If you feel your retainer needs adjusting, don’t try to fix it yourself. Give us a call so we can take care of it for you.
  • Bring it to your appointments: Always bring your retainer with you to your orthodontic visits.
  • Invest in your smile: Retainer replacements can be costly, but with proper care, yours will last for many years!
  • Remove when swimming: Make sure to take your retainer out before swimming.
  • Avoid heat: Keep your retainer away from hot water, car dashboards, pockets, the washing machine, and napkins.

With these simple habits, your retainer will help keep your smile flawless for years to come. And if you ever have any questions or concerns, we’re just a call away!

Time to shine.
